Summary
Darnay supports himself as a French tutor and translator. He tells Doctor Manette that he loves Lucie and asks only that, if she confides a matching love, her father speak of him fairly. He promises never to separate father and daughter, but the prospect of change visibly pains the Doctor.
Darnay begins to reveal his true family name and history. Manette stops him and asks to hear it on the morning of any marriage instead. He promises not to prejudice Lucie against Darnay. Later that night Lucie finds her father sleeping heavily; his tools and work appear as usual.
