Start: If Sydney Carton ever shone anywhere
Stop after: He said, “Farewell!” said a last “God bless you!” and left her.
Summary
Carton visits Lucie and admits that he has proved incapable of change, purpose, or happiness. She compassionately urges him to try again, but he says he has come only to entrust her with the knowledge that she awakened an image of the better life he might have lived.
He asks her to keep the confidence private and wants no answer. Before leaving, he promises that for Lucie or anyone dear to her he would make any sacrifice, even give his life to preserve a life she loves.
