In Saint Antoine, Defarge gathers several men called Jacques around the road-mender from the Marquis’s village. The shared name and the wine-shop’s back room show a group developing disciplined ways to exchange dangerous knowledge.

The road-mender’s storytelling and his audience’s corrections reveal different purposes. His pleasure in spectacle sits uneasily beside Madame Defarge’s colder method of recording names.
