Start: One of the first considerations which arose in the business mind of Mr. Lorry
Stop after: and in his secret mind it troubled him greatly.
Summary
Lorry decides that sheltering an emigrant prisoner’s family inside Tellson’s would endanger property entrusted to him, so he obtains nearby rooms for Lucie’s household. Doctor Manette remains away, and the family has no news of his efforts.
Defarge arrives with an official message: Darnay is alive but cannot leave prison. He and Madame Defarge accompany Lorry to the lodging, ostensibly so Madame Defarge can recognize the family for their safety. Madame Defarge coldly registers Lucie, her child, and Doctor Manette in her memory. Her manner frightens Lucie, and Lorry privately shares the fear he tries to dismiss.
