Summary
Though Darnay is restored to his family, Lucie remains fearful in a city where innocent people die on suspicion. Doctor Manette confidently presents himself as their protector. Miss Pross and Jerry Cruncher go out for provisions, while the family settles uneasily for the evening.
A knock announces four armed officials, who rearrest Darnay on a new denunciation from Saint Antoine. When Manette invokes his authority and asks who accused him, the officers identify Monsieur and Madame Defarge and one other person. Defarge refuses to name that third accuser, promising that the Doctor will learn the answer the next day.
