Section 1The First Direction
Summary
The dreamer sees Christian distressed by a book’s warning that the City of Destruction faces judgment. Evangelist directs him toward a shining light and the wicket-gate. Christian flees; Obstinate returns home, while Pliable joins him but abandons the journey after both fall into the Slough of Despond. Help pulls Christian out and explains the bog’s meaning.
Mr. Worldly-wiseman then recommends relief through Legality in Morality. Christian turns aside, but a threatening mountain terrifies him. Evangelist rebukes this choice: law can condemn but cannot remove the burden, and worldly counsel displaces the appointed way. Christian confesses his error, receives permission to continue toward the gate, and is sent back with a warning and encouragement.
