Christian and Faithful have rejected Talkative’s separation of religious speech from inward change and conduct. Near the end of the wilderness, Evangelist meets them again and prepares them for a town whose values oppose their pilgrimage.
Bunyan turns commerce, public entertainment, and legal procedure into allegory. The pilgrims’ words and behaviour stand against the town’s values, while names suggest the moral character of institutions claiming lawful authority.
