Section 8The Shepherds’ Mountains
Summary
Christian and Hopeful reach the Delectable Mountains in Immanuel’s Land, where shepherds examine their route and perseverance before welcoming them. Knowledge, Experience, Watchful, and Sincere feed and lodge the travellers, then show them sobering wonders: Error’s steep fall, blind wanderers among tombs on Caution, and a byway opening onto hell. The sights connect false teaching, departure from the road, and outward profession with grave danger.
From Clear, the Shepherds offer a perspective glass toward the Celestial City. The pilgrims’ shaking hands make the view uncertain, though they think they see its gate and glory. Their hosts send them away with a note of the route, warnings against the Flatterer and sleep on Enchanted Ground, and a blessing.
