Section 18Houses of Fellowship
Summary
Gaius welcomes the pilgrims, teaches through Scripture and supper, and proposes Mercy’s marriage to Matthew. Great-heart and companions kill Slay-good and rescue Feeble-mind, whose weakness has slowed but not ended his pilgrimage. Phoebe marries James, and Great-heart invites Feeble-mind onward, promising that the stronger pilgrims will restrain disputable liberties for his sake. Ready-to-halt joins him as a fitting companion.
In Vanity, Mnason hosts the group and introduces local believers. During the company’s long stay, Grace and Martha marry Samuel and Joseph, while the women continue caring for the poor. Great-heart and the townsmen repeatedly fight a seven-headed monster that preys on children, reducing its power. After leaving, the pilgrims honor Faithful’s martyrdom, then pass Hill Lucre and Lot’s wife. These memorials prompt a warning: visible ruin may not restrain desire when gain dazzles the eye.
