Section 21The Land of Beulah
Summary
In fragrant, musical Beulah, the pilgrims wait near the river while townspeople announce arrivals at the golden gates. Christiana receives a summons to appear before the Master within ten days. She blesses and counsels her family and companions, gives to the poor, then crosses and is joyfully received. Ready-to-halt, Feeble-mind, Despondency with Much-afraid, and Honest follow, each meeting the river differently and leaving words shaped by a former weakness.
Valiant-for-truth leaves his sword to another but carries his battle scars as testimony. Stand-fast asks Great-heart to carry messages to his family, then crosses in hope of seeing the Lord he has known by faith. Trumpets, music, and chariots mark their reception. The narrator does not describe the crossings of Christian’s sons and their families: he says they remain alive to increase the church and closes with what he has witnessed.
