Part III · Chapter 8Carton’s Hand of Cards
Summary
While buying wine, Miss Pross recognizes her long-lost brother Solomon. Jerry recognizes him too—as John Barsad, the Old Bailey spy. Sydney Carton appears, confirms the identification, and brings Barsad to Tellson’s. There Mr. Lorry tells Carton that Darnay has been arrested again, and Carton asks Lucie not to be told he is in Paris.
Carton pressures Barsad to secure access to Darnay in the Conciergerie. His “cards” are Barsad’s false identity, his former service as an English spy, suspicious dealings with Roger Cly, and Carton’s claim that Cly is alive. Jerry reluctantly reveals that Cly’s English coffin contained only paving stones. Facing denunciation as a prison spy, Barsad admits his position gives him freedom to enter and leave the prison, then agrees to a final private discussion.
