Part III · Chapter 12Carton’s Preparations

Reading boundary Start: Sydney Carton paused in the street, not quite decided where to go. Stop after: he breathed a blessing towards it, and a Farewell.

Summary

Carton visits the Defarges’ wine-shop so they will notice his resemblance to Darnay and believe him unfamiliar with French. Unrecognized, he overhears Madame Defarge declare that Lucie, her child, and Doctor Manette must also die. Defarge and the Vengeance show some hesitation, but Madame Defarge’s family grievance is implacable; the wood-sawyer can testify against Lucie.

After walking through the night and buying a chemical from a pharmacy, Carton meets Lorry. Manette returns mentally broken, searching for his shoemaking bench. Carton takes charge: Lorry must safeguard the existing travel papers, keep Carton’s own pass, and have a carriage ready to leave at two the next afternoon. Carton says Lucie’s family faces denunciation and must depart without delay. He escorts Manette home, looks up at Lucie’s light, and says farewell.
