A preview-and-review companion to the complete four-fytte Middle English poem.
How to use this companion
Work in order. Preview the section, read through its visible stopping phrase, then return for the review.
Why this book uses reading sections
The anonymous poet did not supply chapters. Shelf Stable follows the four bracketed fytte divisions in Richard Morris’s edition, treating each complete fytte as one editorial reading section. The displayed opening and stopping phrases identify those boundaries in the Unicode-yogh rendering.
A note before you read
This is the original Middle English poem, not a modern translation. Gutenberg includes two renderings of the same text; the Read links and boundaries use the later rendering with the Middle English letter yogh (ȝ) rather than the digit 3 substituted for it in the first rendering. Morris’s explanatory side-notes appear alongside the poem and can help with the language, but they sometimes summarize action before its verse lines.
