Section 12The Dream Begins Again
Summary
Dreaming again, the narrator meets Mr. Sagacity and learns that Christian, once mocked, is now honoured even by people unwilling to face his dangers. Sagacity then tells of Christiana. Grief for her husband becomes guilt as she remembers rejecting his warnings and keeping their sons from joining him. A dream confronts her with her record and shows Christian before the Prince; the messenger Secret then announces that the Merciful One is ready to forgive and brings a fragrant, gold-lettered letter from the King directing her to the wicket-gate.
Christiana and her four sons prepare to leave. Mrs. Timorous urges her not to risk the dangers Christian faced, but Christiana treats the invitation as too valuable to refuse. Mercy, torn between affection for Christiana and concern for her own soul, goes with her. Timorous returns to neighbours who dismiss the pilgrimage and turn instead to talk of entertainment at Madam Wanton’s.
