Section 5Companions in Conversation
Summary
Christian overtakes Faithful, falls after a proud smile, and needs his help. Faithful recounts temptations Christian did not meet: Wanton’s pleasure, Adam the First’s enslaving offer, Moses’ merciless blows, Discontent’s appeal to honour, and Shame’s social contempt. He nevertheless passed through the dark valley in sunshine.
Talkative impresses Faithful with fluent religious discussion, but Christian reports that his home and business conduct contradict his words. Faithful tests him on the evidence of saving grace. Talkative offers outcry against sin and knowledge; Faithful insists on repentance, faith, inward renewal, and conduct before God and neighbour. Offended when asked about his own life and conscience, Talkative leaves.
